Our Campaign’s Top Issues

We will continue to update this section as we talk to citizens from Michigan's 12th Congressional District.

Reproductive Freedom

Royce believes that reproductive health care should be between a woman, her family, and her doctor. The Dobbs decision given by the right-wing leaning Supreme Court has taken a right that was codified in law over 50 years ago. IVF is now under attack and extremist Republicans are to blame.

The Gaza War

Royce believes that America must support its allies. Israel has the right to protect itself from foreign invaders and those who wish to do it harm. Additionally, Israel must do so in a manner that adheres to the rules of war and that minimizes casualties of innocent men, women, and children.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Royce believes in fixing America’s broken immigration policy. In 2016, The Obama and Biden administration had crossings at the southern border down at its lowest point in 50 years at that point. Even though the Trump administration had a Republican-led House of Representatives and Senate, they did not pass comprehensive immigration reform policies.

Civic Education and Engagement

Royce believes that all Americans should be engaged in the political process. As a former social studies teacher, he thinks that there is a connection between low voter turnout and civic education.

Safer Neighborhoods

Royce has been working hard to make neighborhoods safer in Michigan’s 12th Congressional District by teaching social and emotional learning to students and conflict resolution skills to adults. He seeks common-sense gun reform by making weapons of war illegal again. Royce believes that illegal guns should be kept out of our communities.

Affordable Housing

Royce has been a champion for affordable housing and homeownership for many years. Detroit has the 3rd highest increase in residential rental rates in America. This is a problem. He wants to assist constituents in determining if they are eligible for housing assistance from the state of Michigan and the federal government as a way of mitigating these costs.

Better Paying Jobs

Royce believes that every American should have the opportunity to experience life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness by having a well-paying job. He thinks that these jobs should not be paid differently based on gender, race, sexual orientation, gender identification, religion, etc.

Lower Costs

Royce will work hard to lower healthcare, childcare, and education costs, and the increasing prices of prescription medicines. He proudly supported the Inflation Reduction Act. Medicare will be able to use its substantial buying power to negotiate lower costs for prescription drugs. Additionally, the price of insulin will be capped at $35 a month for those enrolled in Medicare.

Criminal Justice Reform

Jails and prisons are disproportionally filled with individuals who are poor and low-wealth, people of color, mentally ill, and illiterate. America incarcerates more people than any other in the world. That should not be so. Royce supports reform in education, mental health, and passing the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act.

Education Reform

The National Assessment of Educational Progress, (NAEP) has reported that for the first time in its reporting history, American children’s test scores in math and reading have decreased. Unfortunately, the drop has been most significant among minority students.
